What to do during the first trimester of pregnancy ?
• Consult your doctor every month.
• Hospitalization and intravenous glucose in a drip may be required if you are losing fluid every time you vomit. Consult a doctor.
• Have frequent meals in small quantities, six to seven times in a day.
• Breathe in fresh air deeply. Brush your teeth twice daily.
• Get 8 to 10 hours sleep during night and at least two hours rest during daytime. Due to hormonal changes one feels lethargic and exhausted. If you feel dizziness, sit down with your head between the knees.
• Love making and sex can be continued except when there is pain in the abdomen, bleeding from the vagina or any history of miscarriage.
• Do not wear tight clothes nor stand for long periods of time.
• Excess tea or coffee is harmful. Smoking affects the unborn child.
• Avoid overexertion and long journeys. Avoid jerky movements.
• X-rays are very harmful, especially in the first trimester.
During the second trimester of pregnancy which starts from the 13th week and continues up to the 28th week, it is the most enjoyable period as the discomforts of early pregnancy begin to wear off. Changes you will observe during this trimester include disappearance of nausea and vomiting, the desire to urinate frequently subsides, and clear water secretion from nipples becomes thick, enlargement of breasts and the veins become prominent. You should not worry over the gradually increasing bulge in abdomen and small, pink and white streaks visible on the lower abdomen and upper thighs due to the stretching of the skin. Nipples and the surrounding skin darkens in this period and you will feel the movement of your growing baby at 18 weeks in case of first pregnancy.
Eat a well-balanced diet to avoid chances of excessive weight gain. Take extra vegetables, pulses and fruits. Avoid excessive intake of sugar, salt and spices in the food. Drink plenty of water. Normal sex is permissible within the physical constraints imposed by the growing womb. Sexual intercourse is permissible in the 2nd trimester, except in cases of previous miscarriages or in case of vaginal bleeding.
