How to Keep Body Odor at Bay ?

Every region of the human body has a different odor. The average person loses at least half a liter of sweat every day and this figure rises during the hot season and when physical exercises are done. Sweat has a slightly acrid smell. Areas like the feet pose a problem because the sweat becomes trapped by socks and shoes. Heavy odor is associated with the armpits because the sweat cannot evaporate easily. There are two other glands, the aprocrine and sebaceous glands. The aprocrine glands have a limited supply of sweat on the armpits, genital areas and eyelids. They are odorless and rich in fats, protein and other organic material, all of which make an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. The bacteria decomposes the sweat to produce the characteristic body odor. The third type of secretory glands are the sebaceous glands. These are distributed all over the body, with the exception of the palms and the soles. Sebaceous glands produce an oily lubricant known as sebum which contains cholesterol, fatty acids, waxes and proteins.
To get rid of body odor, take the following precautions :
• In summer, bathe twice a day. Use glycerin soap.
• In case of a skin disease, use medicated disinfectant.
• In summer, to treat prickly heat, rub sandalwood to a paste, mix in rose water, add a pinch of alum and apply on the affected skin twice a week.
• Take a bath in running water. Avoid a tub bath.
